Airtel Introduces USSD-Based Access to Facebook, From Today

May 18th, 2011 by Bhavesh Kakadiya No comments »

Staying connected through most part of the day is a habit that technology has initiated. Social networking mediums like Facebook have made it a lot easier to stay in touch too.

Popular service provider, Airtel has introduced an offer which allows Facebook account holders among its users to post status updates on the site for free. The offer that gets activated from today, introduces Airtel’s USSD-based service, which Airtel claims can be availed by users without actually subscribing to their data plans.

Airtel’s latest introductory feature – the USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) enables Facebook access without the users having to use internet/GPRS. The USSD system itself acts as a browser and gets content onto the phone.  Using this service, users can – update their Facebook status messages, view, post comment /‘Like’ news feed, post on friends’ walls, find/add friends, confirm friend requests, view notifications, among others.

Airtel pitches this service as a highly affordable, easy mode of staying connected. All that users need to do to avail this service is dial *325# (and “*fbk#” for non-qwerty mobile handsets.)

Rovio Builds Giant Angry Birds in Real Life

May 18th, 2011 by Bhavesh Kakadiya No comments »

There’s been all sorts of attempts to make Angry Birds come to life, from plush toys, to cakes to board games. However, Rovio took matters into their own claws and made a giant Angry Birds real life re-enactment of the game. This stunt was to promote Deutsche Telekom’s new services and the giant version of the game was set up and filmed at Plaça Nova de Terrassa in Spain.

Of course, the game isn’t like what it would be on a mobile phone but the pigs are in their blankets and completely destroyed. A jazz band plays the Angry Birds theme song as the destruction happens. Rovio’s been beefing up their merchandise store for Angry Birds too, so hopefully a giant life size re-enactment of the game will be available for purchase sometime soon.

Mozilla Troubled: 12mn Users Still Using Firefox 3.5

May 18th, 2011 by Bhavesh Kakadiya No comments »

Mozilla’s latest Firefox 4 was an instant hit with more than 150 million downloads in a short span of time.

But Mozilla still isn’t completed satisfied with these numbers because it still can’t get a large chunk of its users off the older version Firefox 3.5.

As per figures posted by the popular browser, about 12 million users are still hooked onto the older versions of Firefox. Considering the large number of users that are still using the older versions of Firefox, the browser has several steps in its kitty, which it believes should do the trick. These steps include – placing pointers on the Google page that not only urge the old version users to upgrade their versions, but also provide them with appropriate links to do so. Generic methods like pop-ups and having the media do a little bit of ‘spread the word around’ are also being used. Mozilla, apparently is at the end of its rope with the constant patching procedures, and understandably so. Also, the threat levels will obviously be high in the older versions.

Nokia N9 gets teaser video

Sure, we’ve known of the Nokia N9′s existence for some time now, a fact made all the more real by the handset’s recent FCC appearance, but is a phone really real until its gets its first dramatic ad spot? Pocketnow managed to score a teaser for the upcoming QWERTY slider — not the first time we’ve seen this thing on video, as those who can remember as far back as 2010 will recall. Interestingly, the UI seems to be consistent with the Anna release of Symbian rather than something totally unique to MeeGo — though elements like the status bar and multitasking appear different from what we’ve seen of that version of Symbian. Also, if you don’t blink, you’ll see the 12MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens and the chiclet keyboard. As for the live version of “Jessie’s Girl,” that’s anyone’s guess. But the N9 is running Meego, according to the official Facebook page. We also noticed after watching the video a couple times that the camera is autofocus instead of EDoF (see enhanced video frame after the break), which is excellent news!

Apple Thinks Smaller is Better. We’re Talking SIM Cards of Course…

May 18th, 2011 by Bhavesh Kakadiya No comments »

When Apple launched the first iPad a little over a year ago, it introduced a fairly new SIM format called Micro SIM. A few months later, those Micro SIMs were also implemented in the iPhone 4. Smaller in size compared to the standard Mini SIMs, Micro SIMs do the exact same job while using less space.

Always on the fore front of tech pioneering, Apple is now submitting a new requirement to the European Telecoms Standards Body (ETSB) for the use of even smaller SIM cards in cell phones and mobile devices…

The goal behind this is obviously to enable phone manufacturers, including Apple, to make devices that are even smaller and thinner.

This move goes against reports late last year that Apple was looking into dumping SIM cards and skipping the carriers by providing devices with a SIM integrated into the device. Because Apple raised anger in many carriers HQs, they probably gave up the idea of an integrated SIM for something that would make everyone happy.

As usual, time will tell but it does make sense for manufacturers to petition for smaller SIMs, doesn’t it?

Intel Promises x86-based Phones In 2012

During investment presentations, Intel CEO Paul Otellini admitted that the company’s old strategy for mobile needed a makeover, but was optimistic about their prospects come 2012.

Intel is redirecting itself towards the mobile arena, and with big goals, too. Otellini said Intel’s focus would shift toward more ultra-mobile hardware like phones and tablets, and look to make them more power-efficient than any device we’re seeing in today’s market. Intel’s executive VP for mobile David Perlmutter shed some extra light on the plans, noting that future Intel-based devices will mimic many of the features seen on today’s tablets, such as instant-on, persistent Internet access, and battery life of about 10 hours. First half of 2012 was mentioned as a target for x86 handset launches, but beyond that plans were hazy.

“In two years we expect that Intel-based devices will combine the best attributes of PCs and tablets,” said Perlmutter. Not Meego devices, though, which Otellini admitted were taking a huge hit from the Microsoft-Nokia partnership. So Meego is on ice for now.

Obviously, it’ll be a while before Intel infiltrates handsets and tablets in a major way, but the company definitely has mobile in its crosshairs and now they’ve got some stated goals we can look forward to.
